In Vilvoorde, we replaced an old water heater with an Atlantic Explorer V5 thermodynamic water heater (200 L) — with a clever extra: connecting it to the boiler to guarantee hot water in all circumstances.
What is a thermodynamic water heater?
A thermodynamic water heater is a water heater with a small built-in heat pump: it draws free heat from the ambient air to warm your domestic water. The result: up to 3 times less electricity than a conventional electric water heater.
The benefits
- ✅ Efficient hot water: up to 3× less electricity than an electric water heater.
- ✅ Eco-friendly: it uses energy from the air and a natural refrigerant (R290).
- ✅ Autonomous and simple: it runs on its own, with no heavy maintenance.
- ✅ Eligible for subsidies in Flanders (see below).

Our edge: the version with a heat exchanger (boiler back-up)
Here, we chose the version with a coil and flange, which allowed us to connect the tank to the existing boiler. The benefit is concrete: if the tank's heat pump ever fails, the boiler automatically takes over to heat the water. The customer keeps their domestic hot water with complete peace of mind, without any interruption.
Subsidies: up to €1,200
In Flanders, a thermodynamic water heater qualifies for a subsidy of up to €1,200, depending on your income. Combined with the energy savings, the installation quickly pays for itself.
